OVERVIEW

About Float

Float is a cash flow forecasting tool for small and growing businesses that keep their books in Xero or QuickBooks Online. It reads your bank balances, invoices, bills and transactions and turns them into a rolling forecast. You can switch between weekly, 13-week and monthly views, and add what-if scenarios such as a new hire. It is a forecasting tool rather than an agent: it suggests recurring costs, budgets and expected payment dates, but you decide what goes into the forecast. Float is based in Edinburgh and has been running since 2012.

The sync is one way. Float pulls data from your accounting software once a day, or when you ask, and does not write anything back. That makes it low risk to try, but the forecast is only as good as your bookkeeping, so reconcile your bank and keep invoices and bills current first. Some reviewers say Float keeps only a short run of past data and that the price rises as the business grows. The 14-day trial is long enough to compare its 13-week view with the forecast you use today.

What the workflow does

  • Rolling cash flow forecast: Builds a forecast from reconciled bank balances, invoices, bills and bank transactions synced from your accounting software.
  • Weekly, 13-week and monthly views: Uses the 13-week view for day-to-day cash decisions and the monthly view for longer planning; forecast length depends on the plan.
  • What-if scenarios: Toggles income and costs on or off and models cases such as a new hire on top of the base forecast.
  • Suggested recurring costs: Spots recurring costs in your transaction history and suggests them for you to confirm.
  • Auto-budgets and expected payment dates: Builds budgets from 3, 6 or 12 months of actuals and adjusts expected invoice payment dates from each customer's payment history.
  • Sharing and roles: Gives people Admin, Editor or Viewer access, with comments on budget lines, invoices and bills, and CSV or PDF export.

IS IT A GOOD FIT?

Who it’s for

A good fit for

  • Small and growing businesses on Xero or QuickBooks Online that forecast cash in spreadsheets today.
  • Accountants and advisors who review cash with several clients.
  • Finance leads who need a short-term cash view to share with a board or lender.

Not the best fit for

  • Businesses on other accounting software; Sage Intacct and iplicit are listed as coming soon.
  • Anyone expecting an agent that chases invoices, pays bills or changes the books.
  • Seasonal businesses that need several years of history in the forecast, based on reviewer feedback.

Strengths

  • Replaces manual cash flow spreadsheets.
  • Scenario planning and clear charts for explaining cash to others.

Limitations

  • Reviewers mention a short run of stored history, which limits year-on-year comparison.
  • The price rises with business size even when the features stay the same.
  • Trustpilot reviews are few and old, and Float has not recently invited reviews there.
