Claude for small business: reusable projects and recipes to try

Claude is Anthropic's AI assistant on the web, desktop and mobile. A project keeps your instructions and reference files in one place, so every new chat starts with the same rules: paste or attach that run's material and review the result. Claude can also read uploaded files, create spreadsheets and documents, search the web and use connected apps.

Last checked: · Sources

Who can use it

  • Free, Pro, Max, Team or Enterprise plan
  • Free plan: up to five projects
  • Web, desktop app, or iOS and Android apps
  • Anthropic's supported countries and regions

What Claude app can do

  • Projects

Save instructions once in a project and add reference files to its knowledge. Every chat in the project follows them, and each project keeps its own memory.

Example: A project that checks each new client brief against your standard questions.

  • Files and file creation

Attach PDFs, documents, spreadsheets and images, up to 20 files per chat. With Code execution and file creation on, Claude can analyze data and create Excel, Word, PowerPoint and PDF files.

Example: Compare two report exports and return a reconciliation workbook.

  • Web search, connectors and skills

Claude can search the web and cite its sources, use the apps you connect under Customize, Connectors, and follow skills you upload under Customize, Skills.

Example: Check each venue's opening hours and link the page it came from.

Skills you can add to Claude app

A skill is a folder of instructions that Claude app can use for a specific task. Add it once, then ask for the task in your own words.

  • Sales call follow-up

Turn call notes into a recap email that promises only what was agreed, proposed CRM changes and a task list with owners and dates.

  • AI job search

Find current job openings, drop duplicates and expired posts, and shortlist them against your must-haves and real experience.

  • Quarterly data presentation

Turn a quarter's spreadsheet and your notes into a checked analysis and a bold navy-and-aqua deck: big numbers, honest charts and a source for every figure.

  • Shape mascot character

Turn any item you name or photograph into a friendly cartoon mascot holding it: a bright shape with big eyes, rubber-hose arms and white gloves, as an editable SVG and PNG.

  • Trip route map

Turn the places you will visit into an elegant poster map of your trip: real coastlines and borders, pins, a stop list with nights, and an icon or short note for each place.

  • Visual design

Design an original poster, cover or social graphic in a bold modular style: a square grid of flat geometric shapes in a few strong colors around your exact text, as an editable SVG and PNG.

Set up your first Claude app task

  1. Sign in at claude.ai, or open the Claude desktop or mobile app. Projects are available on every plan; free accounts can create up to five.
  2. Click Projects on the left, or go to claude.ai/projects, then click + New Project and name it after one job.
  3. Pick a recipe below and choose its settings. Click Set project instructions, paste the setup prompt and click Save instructions.
  4. Start a new chat in the project, run the recipe's fictional sample and compare the answer with the review checks.
  5. For each real run, start a new chat in the project and paste or attach that run's material. Keep the reference files every run needs in the project knowledge.

What to check before you trust it

  • Test with the recipe's fictional sample before you add real material.
  • Chats in a project do not share context unless the information is in the project knowledge, so keep the files every run needs there.
  • Each project has its own memory. To keep one chat out of it, turn off Memory in the + menu before your first message.
  • Remove personal details a task does not need before you paste or attach material.
  • Check every result against your sources before you act on it; web search answers include citations you can open.

Good to know

  • The help articles do not state explicitly that uploaded custom skills run in Cowork; they say shared skills work in chat and Cowork.
  • Plan, admin settings and rollout can change which upload options an account sees.
  • The projects help page does not say what each project's memory keeps or list how many files project knowledge holds.

We have not run these setups ourselves. Recipes are written from public Claude app documentation, and their examples are illustrative.

Frequently asked questions about Claude app

Can I use Claude projects for free?

Yes. Projects are available to all users, including free accounts, which can create up to five projects.

What is the difference between a Claude project and a chat?

A project keeps instructions and reference files that every chat in it uses. Chats in a project do not share context with each other unless the information is in the project knowledge, so each run starts clean.

Can Claude open my spreadsheets and create files?

Yes, with Code execution and file creation turned on under Settings, Capabilities. Claude can analyze uploaded spreadsheets and create Excel, Word, PowerPoint and PDF files of up to 30 MB each.

Can a Claude project run on a schedule?

No. Each run in a project starts when you send a message. For work that should run on its own, see the Claude Duet recipes.

Can my team share a Claude project?

On Team and Enterprise plans you can share a project with your organization or with colleagues, who can view or edit it. Only the project's creator can remove someone's access.
