Agent platform

n8n for small business: what it does and recipes to try

n8n is a workflow automation tool. Its AI Agent node connects a chat model to tools and decides which tool to call for each step, while other nodes connect your apps. You can use n8n Cloud or host it yourself, and workflows can run on a schedule once published. Check account permissions, API access and model costs first.

What n8n can do

  • AI Agent node

Connect a chat model and at least one tool. The agent decides which tool to call to complete the task.

Example: Review payment matches against invoices in a data table.

  • Schedules and triggers

The Schedule Trigger runs a published workflow at set intervals, from minutes to months.

Example: Every Monday at 8:00, check new support tickets.

  • App connections

Built-in nodes and credentials connect apps such as Gmail, Google Sheets, Slack, HubSpot and Jira.

Example: Read a Google Sheet and post a summary to Slack.

Set up your first n8n task

  1. Choose n8n Cloud or a self-hosted n8n, and check who can create credentials.
  2. Pick a recipe below. It lists the apps, credentials and access the workflow needs.
  3. Create the credentials and workflow nodes the recipe describes, starting with a Manual Trigger.
  4. Paste the copied setup prompt into the AI Agent node and attach only the tools the recipe names.
  5. Run the fictional exercise first, check every result, and publish the workflow only when it is ready.

What to check before you trust it

  • Give each credential the narrowest read-only access the workflow needs.
  • Test with a Manual Trigger and fictional data before you connect real accounts.
  • Check each execution's input and output before you publish a schedule.
  • Keep writes, payments and messages behind a human approval step.

Good to know

  • Account permissions, API access, plan limits and provider changes must be checked for the exact guide; no external platform trial has been run.

We have not run these setups ourselves. Recipes are written from public n8n documentation, and their examples are illustrative.
