OVERVIEW
About Dext
Dext is a bookkeeping data-capture tool for small businesses and their accountants. You send receipts, bills and invoices through the phone app, email, WhatsApp or upload, and it reads the supplier, date, tax and total. It applies supplier rules, flags duplicates and sends anything it is unsure about to you. After review, it publishes the entries to accounting software such as Xero or QuickBooks Online and keeps a searchable copy of each document.
The AI Assist add-on watches how you categorise suppliers and tax, then suggests rules for future documents. None of those suggestions apply until you approve them, and an optional auto mode is available once they prove reliable. Bank statement and line-item extraction are paid add-ons. Dext does not chase people for missing receipts, so someone still needs to collect them. Data is stored in the EU, and your accounting software stays the record for reconciliation and reports.
What the workflow does
- Receipt and invoice capture: Takes documents from the mobile app, email forwarding, WhatsApp or desktop upload.
- Data extraction: Reads supplier, date, tax, total, currency and invoice number, with line items as a paid add-on.
- Supplier rules and duplicate checks: Applies rules learned from how you treat each supplier, flags duplicates and sends uncertain items to you first.
- AI Assist suggestions: Suggests categories, descriptions and tax treatments from your past decisions, each with an explanation; nothing applies until you approve it.
- Publishing to accounting software: Sends reviewed entries to Xero, QuickBooks Online and other supported systems.
- Bank statement extraction: Turns bank statement pages into transaction data as a paid add-on.

IS IT A GOOD FIT?
Who it’s for
A good fit for
- Small businesses on Xero or QuickBooks Online with a steady flow of supplier bills and receipts.
- Bookkeepers and accountants who process documents for several clients.
- Teams that already photograph or forward receipts and want them coded.
Not the best fit for
- Teams that need a tool to chase staff or suppliers for missing receipts.
- Businesses that mainly want to approve and pay back employee expense claims in the same tool.
Strengths
- Photographing receipts and publishing them to accounting software is described as quick.
- Support is often described as friendly and fast.
Limitations
- Trustpilot notes no recent history of inviting reviews, so the sample may not be representative.
- About 7% of reviews are one-star; complaints mention app update waits and login code problems.
- Reviews cover Dext as a whole, not the newer AI Assist add-on.
