What can Hermes Agent do? Skills and recipes you can use

Hermes Agent is a free, open-source AI agent from Nous Research that you install on your own computer or server. You choose the AI model and pay that provider. It can search and browse the web, run scheduled jobs, chat with you on Telegram, Slack and other apps, and use skills, which are folders with a SKILL.md file.

Last checked: · Sources

Who can use it

  • Free and open source (MIT)
  • Linux, Apple Silicon Mac, Windows or WSL2
  • Your own model key, or a Nous Portal account
  • Some setup in a terminal
  • Scheduled jobs need the gateway running

What Hermes Agent can do

  • Skills from SKILL.md folders

Hermes skills follow the agentskills.io standard. Save one in ~/.hermes/skills/ and it becomes a slash command with the skill's name. Hermes can also write and improve its own skills as it works.

Example: /meeting-recap Turn these notes into decisions and actions.

  • Scheduled jobs

Ask in plain language or use /cron add to run a task on a schedule, such as every Monday at 9am. Each run starts a fresh session, so the job's instructions must be complete, and the result can go to a chat app such as Telegram.

Example: Every Monday at 9am, summarize last week's support requests and send me the summary on Telegram.

  • Web, browser and Google Workspace

Web search works on a fresh install, and a browser tool reads pages that need the live page. The bundled Google Workspace skill connects Gmail, Calendar, Drive, Sheets and Docs through your own Google Cloud project.

Example: Search the web for this company's latest news and list the sources with dates.

Skills you can add to Hermes Agent

A skill is a folder of instructions that Hermes Agent can use for a specific task. Add it once, then ask for the task in your own words.

  • Sales call follow-up

Turn call notes into a recap email that promises only what was agreed, proposed CRM changes and a task list with owners and dates.

  • Account reconciliation

Compare accounting records with a clear audit trail, separate uncertain matches, and explain remaining differences.

  • Research synthesis

Combine supplied sources into a clear answer that preserves evidence, disagreement, and uncertainty.

  • Document field extraction

Extract requested fields into a source-linked table without guessing missing or unreadable values.

  • Prospect fit research

Check a named company against your customer criteria and return a sourced fit brief.

  • Business process documentation

Turn team notes into a repeatable process with clear owners, decisions, exceptions, and completion checks.

  • Sales call preparation

Prepare a focused sales-call brief from meeting notes and customer history, with evidence, questions, and a realistic next step.

  • Content strategy

Choose what to publish, improve or stop using audience evidence, existing content and production capacity.

  • Website copywriting

Write page-specific website copy with a message map, supported claims and visible commercial terms.

  • Support ticket triage and escalation

Sort support tickets by evidence-based priority with draft first replies, and package cases that need another team into a clear handoff.

  • Data visualization

Turn a supplied dataset into a readable chart with reproducible steps and observations supported by the data.

  • Product roadmap planning

Organize proposed product work into a roadmap that makes priorities, dependencies, and unanswered decisions clear.

Set up your first Hermes Agent task

  1. Install Hermes from the official installation page: a one-line command for Linux, Apple Silicon Macs or WSL2, a PowerShell command for Windows, or the desktop app.
  2. Run hermes setup. Quick Setup signs you in to Nous Portal; Full Setup lets you add your own key for OpenRouter, OpenAI, Anthropic, Google or another provider.
  3. Connect only what the task needs. Ask Hermes to set up Google Workspace for Gmail, Calendar or Sheets, and run hermes gateway setup to chat on Telegram, Slack or another app.
  4. Pick a skill or recipe below. Save a skill as ~/.hermes/skills/<skill-name>/SKILL.md, start a new chat and call it with / and the skill's name.
  5. For scheduled work, keep the gateway running, create the job with /cron add or a plain request, and check the first result before you rely on it.

What to check before you trust it

  • Start read-only: ask for lists and drafts before you let Hermes send, edit or delete anything.
  • The Google Workspace skill can send email and write to Sheets, and its setup page states no confirmation rule, so keep recipe prompts draft-only.
  • Keep approvals on. The default smart mode asks a second model to judge risky shell commands, and scheduled jobs deny them; setting approvals to off disables all safety prompts.
  • Read a third-party skill before you install it. Hermes scans Skills Hub installs, but a scan is not a review.
  • Test with a fictional sample before you connect real accounts. Scheduled jobs run only while the gateway is running.

Good to know

  • Hermes Agent releases often; commands and defaults can change between versions. No country or age limits are stated in the official docs, and the docs disagree on whether Intel Macs can run the command-line version.

We have not run these setups ourselves. Recipes are written from public Hermes Agent documentation, and their examples are illustrative.

Frequently asked questions about Hermes Agent

Is Hermes Agent free?

Hermes Agent is free and open source under the MIT license. You pay only for the AI model it uses, through your own provider key or a Nous Portal account; local models cost nothing to run.

Can Hermes Agent use JuicyAgents skills?

Yes. Hermes skills follow the agentskills.io standard, and our skills have the name and description it needs. Save the SKILL.md in ~/.hermes/skills/<skill-name>/, start a new chat and call it with / and the skill's name.

Can Hermes Agent read my Gmail?

Yes, through the bundled Google Workspace skill. Ask Hermes to set up Google Workspace: you create a Google Cloud project and a Desktop app OAuth client, then approve access in your browser. For email only, the himalaya skill works with a Gmail app password.

Can Hermes Agent run tasks on a schedule?

Yes. Ask in plain language, such as every Monday at 9am, or use /cron add. Jobs run only while the gateway is running, and each run starts a fresh session.

Does Hermes Agent ask before it acts?

Its approvals cover risky shell commands, and scheduled jobs deny them by default. The Google Workspace skill can still send email or edit Sheets, so the recipes here tell Hermes to prepare drafts only.
