Agent platform

OpenAI Dots for small business: what they do and recipes to try

A dot is an always-on agent in ChatGPT. It runs in the cloud on its own computer and browser, so it keeps working when your computer is off. You give it an ongoing responsibility, connect plugins such as Gmail, Google Drive and Slack, and it follows up, asks for decisions and can run recurring tasks.

Who can use it

  • ChatGPT Pro 100, Pro 200 or Pro 500
  • Business Premium and Enterprise rolling out
  • Over 18; not in the EEA, UK or Switzerland on Pro
  • ChatGPT desktop app, mobile app or browser
  • No mobile web

What OpenAI Dots can do

  • Ongoing responsibilities

Describe the work you want tracked and the sources to use. Your dot keeps working between conversations and asks you for decisions.

Example: Track quotes that got no reply and suggest follow-ups.

  • Recurring tasks

Describe a schedule in the conversation with a time zone and an end date. Your dot saves it, and you can review or cancel it under Scheduled.

Example: Each weekday at 9:00, sort my inbox and draft replies.

  • Plugins and a cloud computer

Your dot uses the plugins you installed, such as Gmail, Google Drive and Slack, with your existing permissions, plus a browser on its own cloud computer.

Example: Read this week's project channel and emails and draft a status brief.

Set up your first OpenAI Dots task

  1. Check that you qualify: ChatGPT Pro 100, Pro 200 or Pro 500 outside the EEA, UK and Switzerland, or Business Premium or Enterprise as dots roll out.
  2. Open dots in the ChatGPT desktop app, mobile app or a desktop browser and follow the introduction to name your dot.
  3. Open the Plugins tab and install only the plugins your task needs, such as Gmail. Set their permissions so your dot can read without sending.
  4. Pick a recipe below, copy its setup prompt and send it to your dot. It confirms the rules before it starts.
  5. In the desktop app, open your dot's profile: Activity shows tasks and requests for input, and Scheduled shows recurring work.

What to check before you trust it

  • Start read-only: ask for lists and draft text in the conversation before you let your dot change anything.
  • Test with the recipe's fictional sample before you connect real accounts.
  • Add a custom rule in Settings, Personalization, Custom rules so sending and deleting are Ask before taking action or Hand off to you.
  • Use Plugin permissions to allow reading without sending or editing.
  • Check Scheduled after your dot saves a recurring task, and review each run in Activity: a completed run does not prove the result.

Good to know

  • Dots are rolling out gradually; availability, menus, plugins and limits can change.
  • The dots docs do not name a Google Calendar plugin or describe monthly schedules.

We have not run these setups ourselves. Recipes are written from public OpenAI Dots documentation, and their examples are illustrative.

Frequently asked questions about OpenAI Dots

Which plans include OpenAI dots?

ChatGPT Pro 100, Pro 200 and Pro 500 for users over 18 outside the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom and Switzerland. Business Premium and Enterprise are rolling out worldwide; on Enterprise an admin turns dots on. Rollout is gradual.

Do conversations with a dot count toward my ChatGPT limits?

No. Conversations with a dot do not count toward ChatGPT usage limits. Tasks it starts or manages in Work or Codex count toward those products' limits.

Does a dot keep working when my computer is off?

Yes. A dot runs on its own cloud computer and browser. Work on a connected personal computer needs that computer online with the ChatGPT app open.

Can a dot send email without asking?

Your plugin permissions and custom rules decide. You can allow reading email without sending, and a custom rule can make your dot ask before or hand off any action. The recipes here tell your dot to prepare drafts, not to send.

How do I stop a dot's work?

Pause stops the current main task. Stop delegated tasks in Activity, and disable or delete recurring tasks in Scheduled. Stopping work does not undo actions already completed.
