OVERVIEW

About Timely

Timely is a time-tracking tool for agencies, consultancies and other teams that bill or report by the hour. A desktop tracker records time spent in apps, documents, websites and calendar events in the background, so nobody needs to start timers. Timely's AI then drafts timesheet entries and suggests the project or client for each one. You review the draft and approve the entries with a click.

The practical use is ending the weekly struggle to rebuild timesheets from memory. Timely says only entries you approve are shared, and that it takes no screenshots or keystroke logs. Activity tracking still raises privacy questions, so agree with staff what is tracked before rollout. Every self-serve plan includes AI timesheets, but there is no free plan and Starter is limited to 5 users and 20 projects. QuickBooks Online invoice sync and the Jira integration need Premium or above.

What the workflow does

  • Background activity tracking: A desktop tracker records time in web and desktop apps without timers or manual notes.
  • AI timesheet drafts: Drafts timesheet entries and assigns them to projects or clients for you to review.
  • Approve before sharing: You approve entries with one click before they are shared; the rest of your tracked activity stays private.
  • Calendar and work tool links: Brings in Google Calendar and Outlook events and connects to tools such as Jira, GitHub, Linear and Asana.
  • Reports and invoicing: Reports time by project and client, and on Premium or Unlimited syncs invoices with QuickBooks Online.

FROM INPUT TO RESULT

How the workflow works

You provide

  • The Timely desktop tracker installed on each person's computer.
  • A list of clients and projects, or a Harvest import.
  • A calendar connection for meetings.
  • Agreed rules on what activity is tracked and who can see it.

You get

  • Draft timesheets ready to approve instead of rebuilt from memory.
  • More complete records of billable hours for client work.
  • Project time reports without asking staff to log every task.
  1. 1

Agree a tracking policy with staff, then install the tracker for a small group during the 14-day trial.

  2. 2

Compare a week of AI-drafted timesheets with what people actually worked on, and correct the project mapping.

  3. 3

Roll out to the wider team once approved entries match reality and staff are comfortable with the privacy settings.

IS IT A GOOD FIT?

Who it’s for

A good fit for

  • Agencies and consultancies that bill clients by the hour.
  • Teams that dislike timers and fill in timesheets late.
  • Managers who want project time data without screenshots or keystroke logging.

Not the best fit for

  • Teams that mostly work away from a computer, since tracking relies on the desktop tracker.
  • Organisations where staff have not agreed to activity tracking.

Strengths

  • Automatic tracking removes most manual time entry.
  • An easy interface and useful reports for billing clients.

Limitations

  • Some reviewers find it expensive, and one April 2026 reviewer complained about being moved to annual billing.
  • Some reviewers say the AI assigns work to the wrong task or project.
  • The iPhone app is rated lower and was last updated in April 2023.
