OVERVIEW

About Gemini Notebook

Gemini Notebook is Google's research and study tool. It was called NotebookLM until Google renamed it in July 2026, and existing notebooks carried over. You add your own sources, such as PDFs, Google Docs and Slides, web pages, audio files and public YouTube videos. Chat answers use those sources and include citations; hovering shows the quoted text and clicking opens it in context. The Studio panel makes flashcards and quizzes at easy, medium or hard difficulty, plus audio overviews and reports.

The free version has standard usage limits and up to 50 sources per notebook. Google AI Plus doubles the limits and Pro gives four times the standard limits, with more sources per notebook. Personal accounts must verify their age, and users under 18 get stricter content rules and may miss some features. School and work accounts need an admin to switch it on. Google says it can make mistakes, so check quiz answers and citations against your original notes.

What the workflow does

  • Source-grounded chat: Answers questions from the sources you add, with citations that show the quoted passage.
  • Flashcards and quizzes: Generates study aids from your sources with a chosen difficulty and an optional prompt; flashcards can be downloaded as a CSV file.
  • Audio and video overviews: Turns your sources into a spoken, podcast-style summary or a video explainer.
  • Many source types: Accepts PDF, Word, PowerPoint, Google Docs, Slides and Sheets, web links, audio, images, ePub files and public YouTube videos with captions.
  • Google Drive sync: Files imported from Google Drive sync automatically every few minutes.
