How Skills trigger

Learn how an agent decides when a skill fits your request.

The description helps the agent choose

Supported tools can compare your task with a skill’s name and description. When a skill fits, the agent loads its full instructions. This is why a clear description matters.

Be specific about when to use it

If you create a skill, describe the task and the expected input. Avoid a broad description that could match almost anything.

name: meeting-recap
description: Turn meeting notes into a recap with decisions, open questions, and actions.

Ask for it directly when needed

If the agent does not choose the skill, select it or name it in your request. Confirm that it is available first. Automatic selection depends on the tool and the skill’s settings.
