OVERVIEW

About OpenAI Codex

Codex turns a development request into work on a repository. It can read the project, investigate a problem, make file changes and run commands to check what it built. Local workflows fit tasks that need the developer's existing setup. Cloud environments support work that should continue away from the local machine, using a prepared repository, dependencies, tools and access settings. The useful output is a reviewable change with evidence, not only a chat answer.

The best results come from a clear task, relevant project instructions and a usable environment. Codex can perform many intermediate steps, but the team still owns product decisions, code quality and release approval. Give it enough context to understand the expected behavior and ask it to verify that behavior. Afterward, check the diff, the commands it ran and any stated limitations. A separate human review remains valuable even when the agent reports success.

What the workflow does

  • Repository investigation: Examines code and related project context to answer questions and plan a change.
  • Implementation and checks: Edits files and runs permitted development commands, including relevant tests.
  • Local development: Works with the developer's project environment through supported app, CLI and IDE surfaces.
  • Cloud environments: Uses prepared reusable environments, with isolated workspaces for new cloud tasks.
  • Review workflows: Supports code review and connected development workflows; availability depends on plan and integration.

FROM INPUT TO RESULT

How the workflow works

You provide

  • Repository access and a task with observable acceptance criteria.
  • Project instructions, relevant documents and known errors.
  • A local or cloud environment with dependencies and permitted service access.

You get

  • A defined feature or fix prepared for review.
  • An investigated bug with a proposed change and verification evidence.
  • Less manual effort for repetitive repository work and code explanations.
  1. 1

Choose the working environment, provide the task and make the relevant project instructions available.

  2. 2

Allow the agent to investigate and implement within the agreed scope, checking any requests for access or decisions.

  3. 3

Review its diff, test evidence and remaining gaps before merging or releasing through the normal process.

WHAT IT OFFERS

Key features

  • Repository investigation

Examines code and related project context to answer questions and plan a change.

  • Implementation and checks

Edits files and runs permitted development commands, including relevant tests.

  • Local development

Works with the developer's project environment through supported app, CLI and IDE surfaces.

  • Cloud environments

Uses prepared reusable environments, with isolated workspaces for new cloud tasks.

  • Review workflows

Supports code review and connected development workflows; availability depends on plan and integration.

IS IT A GOOD FIT?

Who it’s for

A good fit for

  • Developers with existing projects and clear engineering standards.
  • Teams delegating bounded implementation or investigation tasks.
  • Engineers who need both local work and longer-running cloud tasks.

Not the best fit for

  • Users expecting a production release without reviewing the result.
  • Projects whose dependencies, data or required services cannot be made available to the agent.

Strengths

  • Reviewers report less repetitive work and faster investigation.
  • Users value proposed approaches they can inspect and adapt.

Limitations

  • Code can look correct before important issues are checked.
  • Large projects and unclear instructions can lead to context mistakes.
  • Visible June 2026 examples are G2-invited, incentivized and partly AI-translated.
