OVERVIEW

About Claude Code

Claude Code is built for doing development work inside a real project. It can investigate a bug, implement a feature across several files, write tests and use the project's own commands to check the result. Its terminal workflow is useful for developers who already work with command-line tools, while IDE and desktop surfaces make it easier to inspect changes visually. The same task can include code, documentation and routine development chores.

A good assignment gives it a clear outcome, the relevant project rules and a way to prove the change works. The agent can take many implementation steps, but a developer still needs to check scope, architecture and failure cases. It is particularly useful for existing repositories where the correct solution depends on several files. Avoid treating a passing test or a confident summary as complete proof: inspect what changed and whether the tests cover the requested behavior.

What the workflow does

  • Multi-file implementation: Reads project code and edits several files when a feature or fix requires a coordinated change.
  • Command execution: Runs development commands, tests and other permitted tools to investigate and verify work.
  • Git workflow support: Can prepare branches, commits and pull requests when the user authorizes that workflow.
  • Project instructions and skills: Uses repository guidance and reusable skills; hooks can connect checks around actions.
  • Connected tools: MCP integrations can provide relevant external context and actions through configured services.

FROM INPUT TO RESULT

How the workflow works

You provide

  • A repository, task description and acceptance criteria.
  • Project conventions, dependency information and test commands.
  • Relevant error messages, examples and approved tool connections.

You get

  • A feature or bug fix with a diff that a developer can review.
  • Tests and supporting documentation prepared alongside the implementation.
  • Less repeated work when diagnosing failures or maintaining an existing project.
  1. 1

Start a session in the project and describe the expected behavior, constraints and required checks.

  2. 2

Let the agent inspect, plan and implement the task, reviewing commands and clarifying uncertain requirements.

  3. 3

Check the diff and test results, then use the team's normal commit and pull-request process.

IS IT A GOOD FIT?

Who it’s for

A good fit for

  • Developers comfortable reviewing commands and repository changes.
  • Teams with useful project instructions and a working test setup.
  • Engineers who want to automate recurring maintenance and investigation work.

Not the best fit for

  • Users who cannot judge the generated code or arrange a qualified review.
  • Tasks requiring access or infrastructure that the team cannot provide.

Strengths

  • Users value reasoning across repository files and explanations of unfamiliar architecture.
  • One detailed reviewer describes maintaining automation frameworks and investigating failing API/UI tests.

Limitations

  • It can make broader refactors than expected.
  • Large repositories can increase response time and context needs.
  • Generated code still needs edge-case, performance and security checks.
